I walked into a crowded Orange and Brew Pub at the University of Florida’s Reitz Union, and was approached by a young woman asking me if I wanted to “exhale.” I said of course, and my name was added to a list. Hosted by the Asian American Student Union, this open mic has been around Gainesville for a while. Its original location was in someone’s house, but it has been held at the UF Ampitheatre, and now at the Orange and Brew. Exhale draws a diverse crowd and is a vital element of Gainesville’s poetry nightlife. Their event is held every other Wednesday at 8:30 PM with the exception of the monthly Apartment Poet slams held at this venue, in which case Exhale will begin at 7:30.
